What is a Barycenter?

Planets and stars orbit around their common center of mass. This common center of mass is called the barycenter. It is the center of mass of two or more bodies that orbit one another and is the point about which the bodies orbit.

Barycenter

The Center of mass is the exact center of all the material an object is made up of and every object has a center of mass. The distance from the body's center of mass to the barycenter can be calculated as a two-body problem.

The barycenter is an important concept in fields such as astronomy and astrophysics. They also help astronomers search for planets beyond our solar system.

If one of the orbiting bodies is much more massive than the other and the bodies are relatively close to one another, the barycenter will typically be located within the more massive object.
